When You’re Stuck in “Overwhelmed”

Ever find yourself vacantly staring around you, stuck in “overwhelmed”? Paralyzed by that feeling of there’s-so-much-to-do-and-I-have-no-idea-where-to-start?

When the laundry piles are high enough to consume a small child?

When the bills and school forms and junk mail are taunting you from their mountain on your desk (if you can actually FIND your desk)?

When you’ve developed a twitch in response to the sound of incoming email notifications?

Turns out a vacant stare won’t help you much with this situation, but there are steps that can.

BREATHE

In and out. See? You can do this. Now do it again. It’s kind of miraculous, isn’t it – this whole being alive thing? 

JUST. DO. SOMETHING.

Anything, really. Make your bed. Pick up the dirty clothes laying right next to the empty laundry hamper (because that’s clearly where they go, right?). Throw away that catalog that you love to look at but will never order from.

ARE YOU STILL BREATHING?

Perfect! You’re doing great!

NOW DO SOMETHING ELSE.

Answer one email. Empty the dishwasher. Sign that school fieldtrip permisson slip. Pick something and do it.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOURSELF FOR MAKING PROGRESS.

RINSE AND REPEAT.  You’ve got this!
